With the eco-friendly wave gathering a lot of support, many people are opting for bicycles over gas guzzling SUVs. Although they've been thought of as the poor man's ride – bicycles today are symbol for being 'green' and health-conscious -- choices considered quite cool among certain communities. To add to that, bicycles are quite cheap, require absolutely no maintenance and are very convenient in times when cars get bigger and longer and roads get narrower. For an individual, bicycles seem like the most practical option.

However, bicycles are also the most susceptible to accidents and bikers most susceptible to injury -- either because of drivers of other, bigger vehicles or because of faulty roads. In either case, bicycles are at a distinct disadvantage, because they are much more fragile than other vehicles and will suffer maximum damage in a collision, and also because the have a delicate balance and the slightest disturbance on the road can knock them off. When a biker is a victim of such accident due to no fault of his own, he can file a personal injury claim for all the damages he suffers

Because bicycles are so prone to accidents, road and traffic authorities in many developed cities create special rules and circumstances for bikers, including separate cycling tracks, smooth pavements, caution signs to other vehicles, and proper maintenance of these facilities. It is important the tracks or roads be clean and free of debris, that manholes are covered and dangerous areas be marked clearly and made off-limits. In the case that the biker finds that either of these aspects were not up to the mark, and were direct causes of his accident, he can claim compensation from authorities.

Generally, in a bicycle accident due to improperly maintained roads, sympathies lie with the cyclist and the onus lies on the authorities. This is because the biker has absolutely no protection and could sustain serious injuries, especially head injuries in case of a fall. He also stands to get injured gravely by other vehicles on the street, in case the accident happens on a busy road. Thus, if you've met with a bike accident due to bad roads, broken curbs, uneven sidewalk, debris and other poor maintenance, contact a personal injury solicitor immediately.
