1. A general rule of the thumb is that black ink cartridges are substantially cheaper than color ink cartridges. Therefore, when you are buying your printer or your cartridges, you must consider how you will be using it. If you will be printing a lot of black & white documents, then you have no need to invest in color ink cartridges, or even a color printer. If you will be printing a lot of pictures, however, purchasing color toner is a must.

2. Buying recycled ink cartridges is a great way to not only save money but also do your bit for the environment. You can find recycled ink cartridges very easily at your local Office Depot or Staples.

3. Always make sure that the ink cartridge that you buy is compatible with your printer. A lot of people buy a new ink cartridge only to find that it does not work with their printer model. When shopping for ink cartridges, always make sure to carry your printer make and model number on a piece of paper. This will help you avoid mistakes and save some time as well as money.

4. Ink cartridges can be terribly expensive. Sometimes, it makes better financial sense to buy a printer and ink cartridge combo than a standalone ink cartridge. These combos often come out to be just as expensive as an individual ink cartridge. Keep this tip in mind if you have an old or outdated printer that could be resold on eBay for a few dollars. You could very well buy a new printer that comes pre-bundled with an ink cartridge and save a few dollars in the process.

5. Most ink cartridges come with a manufacturer's warranty. Should your cartridge fail to function as promised, you can return it to the manufacturer for a replacement. Just make sure to keep a copy of your original purchase receipt, the cartridge packaging, and the warranty information.
