Many people treat footwear as an afterthought to an outfit. They slip on the nearest pair and hope they will complement their outfit. In reality the wrong choice of shoes can turn a great outfit into the wrong one.

When 'A' list celebrities attend fashion shows, they're not only considering the clothing but also the footwear that complements the outfit, thus making 'this seasons' look. Footwear is now scrutinized by the magazines and celebrities do not want to be caught making a fashion faux-pas purely because they didn’t wear the right sandal with their outfit.

In this article we hope to give you a guide to choosing footwear so that your shoes complement both your outfit and what you want to communicates to the people around you.

Business Look

If you work in a formal business environment it may be wise to dress conservatively. In these male dominated places women often wear dark trouser or skirt suits.

When wearing a trouser suit a mid heeled shoe is advisable. This creates a great line, elongating the leg which can be helpful particularly if you're on the shorter side. Pumps and loafers can be slightly more relaxed and better if you're taller. For skirt suits, heels are a must. They make the leg a far more flattering shape whatever their size.

In most cases women will opt for a shoe colour the same as their suit e.g. a black suit with black shoes. However if you're brave enough and confident enough, you can show your true personality by added a splash of colour in your footwear. Wearing a Pewter or Purple shoe can lift a dark suit and make you feel great and maybe a bit daring, but will also ensure you're bang up to date with this seasons colours!

Formal Evening Look

Again, just because you're attending a formal evening engagement, doesn't mean that your footwear has to be tamed down. Ensure the shoes complement the outfit. Again mid heels are best as they're not too overstated, they ensure your legs are looking their best and most importantly they're more comfortable if you're going to be standing most of the evening.

Girls-Night-Out Look

This is the time to let your 'footwear do the talking.' Anything will work…it all depends on the mood you're in, who you're going out with and where you intend ending up!

If you're feeling brave enough, dig out those killer heels. If you're wearing a dark outfit, wear a coloured pair of shoes or boots to make a real statement. Patent is an important look again this season, so invest in some black patent shoes or boots if you're not brave enough to use colour. Even if you're wearing your jeans, a red heel or wedge will communicate a thousand words! So go out and enjoy yourself!

Casual Look

Even when you're dressing casually, it is important that your footwear complements both your look and where you're going.

As we go into the autumn season, knee high boots are a must over your skinny or straight leg jeans. Invest in heeled, wedged and flat versions in soft leather. Chocolate shades and black biker styles are 'in' this season. As well as being the up-to-date look of the season, they're practical for all occasions and look great. If you want to add some height, wedge shoes and boots offer a more comfortable alternative to conventional heels.

During the summer months, sandals and flip flops of all heights and colours can compliment your skirts, dresses and shorts. Again, be brave with your use of colour!

The Shoes On ladies' collection has been chosen so that women can find a shoe, boot or sandal for any occasion. Since the company is run by working Mums though, they've chosen a range that is comfortable as well as being of this season's 'look'.
