Were all looking for ways to reduce stress in todays hectic lifestyle, and many have found the perfect answer in meditation. You can get so many benefits through meditation, better sleep, more energy, increased immune function and of course a dramatic reduction in our stress levels. These 5 tips will help you get the most out of your experience of meditation

1. Quiet the mind

This sounds simple but most people know just how hard it can be to stop the thoughts that are running around in your head most of the time. Finding specific techniques that work for you will help immensely.

An ideal place to start is focusing on the breath. Observing, not altering or controlling. Feel the breath as it moves in and out of your body. Feel the rush of the air over your lips and as it travels down your throat and back up and out. Just focusing on this alone is actually a great form of meditation in itself. Its the best way I know to quickly still a turbulent mind.

2. Make a specific time and place

This can be a challenge, but if you can even have a corner in a room and a mat that you sit on, this will help a lot. By keeping a routine of when during the day you meditate your body starts to get used to being in the meditative state at that particular time and it will slip easily into a deep state of relaxation as soon as you begin.

3. Be patient with yourself

Dont expect anything, a hard one for sure and one that youll probably always keep working on, but liberating if you can master it. Theres no specific time that you have to reach a particular goal. It takes as long as it takes and you are at the stage that youre at. Life goes through phases and so does your practice of meditation.

Judgement only creates more turmoil and slows your progress. This applies most of all to judgements of yourself! Most of us love to give ourselves a hard time on a pretty much constant basis. Self-acceptance is key.

4. Discipline yourself

If youve decided to meditate every day, then you need to do it. If that seems like a daunting task then make the commitment to meditate twice a week. Whatever you choose, try and make sure that you can stick to it. Theres no point feeling like you should (pointless word that it is!) meditate daily if you know that theres no way youll be able to maintain it.

Once you pick a timeframe really keep to it. This will actually deepen the spiritual experience, purely keeping a discipline going, despite the egos demands will propel you along at a great speed

5. Dont compare yourself with others

This is once again a form of judgement that is very hard for most of us to escape as it is instilled in us from all sides from a young age. You are at where youre at. This has absolutely nothing to do with anyone except you. You never know what areas someone else has to concentrate on. Without having lived their life you cannot compare. You can only know yourself.

Thousands have used meditation to reduce stress, you can get the same benefits? I'll be very happy if these ideas help you meditate and lead a more fulfilled life. Better relationships, more energy and less stress.
