Several kinds of prayer lend themselves particularly well to living free from fear. Here's a short introduction to each form.


Petitioning Prayer is the kind most of us learned as children. In this kind of prayer we ask that a specific result be granted to us. You might ask that the thing you most fear not come to pass, or that your fear of what is to come should be lifted. You can word this kind of prayer in a way that's particularly conducive to becoming free from fear.

Affirmative Prayer goes a step beyond the Petitioning form in that the Affirmative form affirms to whatever higher power you believe in that you are sure things will turn out ok. Your prayer could simply be a statement that you know your higher power is handling the problem and you are thankful for that. This approach is powerful because you are stating that things will go well instead of asking and hoping that they will.


Gratitude Prayer doesn't ask for anything or assert that you're sure something will work out. Rather, you think about each of the many things in your life you have to be thankful for, and give heartfelt thanks for each. When you concentrate on listing all the good things in your life, and give heartfelt thanks for all those good things, it becomes extremely hard to remain fearful. All the positive energy this activity generates lifts you out of a dark and fearful state into a light and inspired one.

Silent Communion is a meditative type of prayer. You begin by closing your eyes. Then you picture a cord of intense white light flowing from the universe through the top of your head. The light stops at the very center of your being. From there, the white light diffuses throughout your body, clearing away all fear and any other negative feelings. Picturing the light as it spreads through your body causes lightness and happiness and peace to suffuse through your body as well.

Remember that these are just some of the forms of prayer that can help you deal with and eliminate fear. Any type of prayer you like can work, as long as it moves you away from fear and darkness toward happiness and light.
