Ganga, the holiest river in India is worshipped as a Goddess by the Hindus. Gangotri is the origin of the holy river, which has been attracting millions of tourists since the dawn of history. Millions of devotees and tourists come here in search of salvation. This pilgrimage site can be easily accessed in one day from Rishikesh, Haridwar or Dehradun. Here the summers are pleasant and winters are too cold. The Gangotri temple dedicated to the Goddess remains open from May to November.



The Gangotri Glacier is a cluster of many glaciers which are fed to it, forming a huge mass of ice. The glacier is easily reachable. The motorable road ends at the Gangotri temple and from there a 17km long bridge path follows leading to the snout of the glacier.



If you are interested in trekking, then no other place is more rewarding than this destination. Apart from enjoying a salubrious climate, scenic beauty, you will also find amazing flora and fauna on your trek to Gangotri. The views of blue mountain goat is a common sight here. One can take a walk through the beautiful Gangotri town.



Other attractions are Pandu Gufa. A scenic trail from the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam rest house in Gangotri. Also visit the Bhagirath Shila, a small shrine where King Bhagirath meditated. It is believed that if you pray here for a son, your prayer will not go unanswered.


Submerged Shivling (submerged in the river) is a self-manifested Shivling. According to the legend Lord Shiva sat here when he received the Ganga from heaven in his matted locks.
