I watch a lot of movies and TV shows on my PC, usually in full-screen mode. For the simple mouse and keyboard shortcuts it offers, the extensive customisation options and the pleasing interface, GOM player has been my media player of choice ever since I first used it in place of VLC. The most quintessential media player to have ever come out, VLC will play literally any audio or video file you throw at it. Two applications? Well, for the ideal music player, it really depends on your listening behaviour. If you prefer to listen to entire albums and use libraries to sort your music, then iTunes is the best around, bar none. However, if custom playlists are more up your alley, then WinAmp simply cannot be beat. Both offer great audio playback, so whatever you do, download one and don’t even look at Windows Media Player.

Google Chrome is great, there’s no doubt about it. But with the amount of extensions that Firefox has to offer, it simply does a lot more for any power user than Chrome can, at the moment. As a friend of mine puts it, “It’s like the iPhone. What makes it great isn’t the hardware or the software, but the amount of Apps it has to let you do so much more with a phone than you ever thought you could.”

Outlook Express is a great program and has a lot of cool features. There seems no rational reason to leave an interface you are so familiar with, until you actually switch to Thunderbird and are introduced to how much better Outlook could be. Like with Firefox, you will have a ridiculous amount of ‘How did I live without this?’ moments once you avail of the amazing extensions catalogue.
