Obesity is a growing problem in America today, even with more and more money being spent on diets and efforts to lose weight and get in shape. So how is that we want to get healthy yet still slide towards higher obesity rates?

Even though obesity is a well recognized problem here in the United States, this weight problem is felt well beyond the American borders. Obesity has grown to epidemic proportions where over a billion people are now considered over weight.

The blame for the high obesity rate can be put on several shoulders. How about the fast food industry and it's mammoth sized portions of food they give. Or maybe we should blame the fad fitness programs who promise unrealistic results with little or no work. Maybe this fault goes to the governments, corporations, or health care providers who can't provide affordable health care to those in need.

Or would it even be fair to blame anyone but the individual who themselves ultimately do make the final choice on what foods they eat and how often they exercise?

In order to really see the problem, we need to view it on a more broad level.

It goes without saying that our society is much more technologically advanced now than we ever were. Long gone are the days where when we needed to eat meant we'd have to catch and kill or grow our own foods. There are very few miners and laborers in the fields and factories anymore. Now that everything is automated and made easy, we tend to get lazier and allow the machines to do the work for us.

I know that the kids of today would rather play Medal of Honor on Xbox then go out side to play like they used to. Video games, the internet, and digital high definition televisions has children eating more and burning less calories throughout the day.

The thing is, if we don't do something to combat this problem, the outlook for future generations looks grim to say the least. If kids now are overweight, and then these kids have kids, it is only common sense they the new generations will be even more overweight.

This problem has to be solved in a house to house level where the parents or head of house has to make the tough decisions for the kids and limit the amount of food and inside exposure. Encourage your kids to get out and play ball, ride a bike, or just run a muck like children do. If we can set it in the kids heads that health is important now, then health will be important in the future as well.
