Locksmiths in Atlanta are always interested in the ways that criminals get into people's houses, cars, and businesses. It is well known that would-be thieves "case" neighborhoods looking for easy marks. Knowing how burglars think and what they are looking for is important when you are serious about home security.

When you have had success in certain situations, you are going to look for circumstances that provide you with similar opportunities. Conversely, you try to avoid situations that have proven to be difficult for you. In other words, you go to the fishing hole where you usually catch fish, and you stay away from the one that always leaves you coming home empty-handed. Thieves think this way too. They know what types of locks are easy to compromise and which ones are not worth messing with.

As a local Atlanta locksmith I know first hand that good locks are worth their weight in gold. When you have a bump proof lock on your front door that has been installed by a professional it is going to be nearly impossible for a thief to bump the lock. The same is true when it comes to keyed window locks and high grade patio and garage door locks. When you compare the cost of quality security locks with the cost of a break-in, it really is a no-brainer. Homeowners should always have quality, up-to-date locks installed throughout their home that are all in good working order.

However, the point of this article is to highlight another aspect of the home security that quality locks provide: perception. Thieves know their locks, and they can see telltale signs around a home that send them particular signals. If they notice that you have bump proof locks, and see that all entrance areas are well lit, they are going to recognize the fact that security conscious people are occupying the home. How many different residences are there here in Atlanta? Why would a burglar bother with a home that is particularly well protected when there are millions of possibilities to choose from?

There are other psychological deterrents, like decals and signs that warn intruders that your home is protected by a security system or a guard dog (or Smith and Wesson). When you have a security system and/or a well trained guard dog, they probably won't be tested by burglars who see the signs. But even if all you had were the signs, would a burglar take the chance that you were bluffing?

So in summary, good locks and sound home security practices will go a long way toward preventing thieves from entering your home. But perhaps even more importantly, they will stop them from even trying.
