Licensed Professional Counselor
Licensed Professional Counselor (or LPC) is a licensing for the mental health professionals. The title is also known as Licensed Mental Health Counselor (or LMHC). Both the terminologies are widely used in the U.S. states including Maine, Illinois and Tennessee where a two-tier system has been adopted and both these terminologies - LPC and LMHC are in use. Also, in these states, the mental health professionals who belong to a higher tier have the privilege of practicing independently. However, in most of the other states, the LPCs or LMHCs can practice independently. In the United States, the Licensed Professional Counselors can be categorized into six types who provide psychotherapy.
Eligibility
In the United States, a candidate is given license as a Licensed Professional Counselor at the state level and the minimum eligibility is master's degree in counseling or any related field. Besides this educational qualification, the LPCs are also required to obtain a supervised clinical experience. This apart, they also have to undergo and qualify a state licensing exam which comprises the following:

• The National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (or NCE)
• The National Certified Mental Health Counselor Examination (NCMHCE)
49 U.S states have recognized the LPC licensure along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico Guam. However, the requirements differ from one jurisdiction to the other. For example, the Texas state demands a master’s or doctoral degree in the related field with an academic course work in certain areas. Besides, they also ask for supervised practical experience. On fulfilling all the criteria the examinee needs to qualify the National Counselor Exam and the Texas Jurisprudence Exam. In Canada, the licensure is granted by the the Ordre des conseillers et conseilleres d'orientation et psychoeducateurs et psychoeducatrices du Quebec (or the OCCOPPQ), whereas in Malaysia, Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia is responsible for granting the licensure.

Rules and regulations
The LPCs come under the regulation of the federal and state laws. These laws are either for the protection of the title or for defining the scope of practice of the counselor. If a LPC is has additional certifications or happens to be a member of a professional association then they must abide by the rules and codes of ethics of the organizational body they are associated with.
