It's a reality that most brides have to deal with a budget for their wedding these days. What you may not realize is if you spend the right amount of money in the right places, you'll look back on your wedding years from now and forget about the amount of pennies you had to pinch.
Focus on what is important to YOU as a couple to have at your wedding. Sure, your future mother-in-law may love hydrangeas and think you should have thousands of them, but do you want to spend thousands of dollars on flowers that will be wilting at the end of the evening?
A good band is always a nice touch at a wedding, but they can cost upwards of $10,000 and a great DJ can keep the crowd dancing for a fraction of the cost.
Cakes are gorgeous, but keep in mind, that after you cut your first piece, the cake gets taken away and sliced for the guests to eat. Consider having a smaller fancy cake, and then getting a sheet cake to cover the rest of your cake slices.
Pictures are another important area to consider. If having tangible memories of the day are very important to you, then don't leave your choice of photographer until the last minute. Booking your photographer a year or more in advance means you'll have a better chance that they'll be available on your wedding, and you'll lock them in at their current rates.
Since I'm a photographer, I'll give you a little bit of extra insight into this area. Find a photographer whose style and personality you really like. Talk to them. Get to know them and feel comfortable with them. The better they know you and your fiance, the better they'll be able to capture your true personality.
Expensive photography isn't always good. Similarly, inexpensive photography isn't always bad. With that being said, think about you really want in a photographer before you go looking at prices.
Do we want engagement pictures done? Do we have to have an album? Would we like the printing rights to the pictures so we can have all the files for your personal use instead of paying per print? Do we want your entire day covered, from preparation until the end of the reception? Would a guest book with pictures from an engagement shoot be a nice thing to have?
Once you have thought of all these things, THEN go looking for a photographer who meets your needs. Most photographers are willing to budge a little on price. If you find someone that you absolutely LOVE, let them know you adore their work, but they are a bit out of your price range. I'm not talking about asking someone who charges $6,000 to come down to $1,000 or even $3,000. However, asking for a few hundred off here and there never hurt anyone :)
