Unable to Delete an NTFS Volume File

Each file that is stored on an NTFS volume is represented by an entry in a special file system table called MFT (Master File Table). The table contains all the metadata information about a file, folder or metafile that resides on the volume. The information is like file name, file size, location, file creation and modification details and more. So, if MFT is corrupt, system will not be able to access the file. To cope up with such problems, you will need to use your current backup to restore the lost files and folders. But issues might arise if backup fails to restore the data. In such cases, you require to use a powerful hard drive recovery utility to restore the lost or deleted files.

For an instance, consider that you use an NTFS formatted volume. You attempt to delete an unnecessary file from the volume, but the operation fails and you receive the below error message:

“Cannot delete file name: The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable.”

The error is specific to Windows 2000. When you view the System event log of the computer, you come across another error message:

“The file system structure on disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume "Drive_letter:”

As suggested, when you run chkdsk to repair the affected volume, the problem persists.

Cause

Such errors root from MFT corruption. Chkdsk fails to fix such issues because it cannot check the file names in case-sensitive mode. The file names stored in FRS (File Record Segment) and corresponding directory index record possess case-sensitive characters. Since they don't match with each other, chkdsk fails to perform repair operation for them.

Solution

The only possible solution to isolate the given problem is to reformat the affected NTFS volume and restore lost files and folders from backup.

You might need to use a third-party hard drive recovery software if backup could not provide the required results. Hard drive recovery utilities employ high-end scanning algorithms to diagnose a logically crashed drive to restore all type of lost files and folders.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is a fully-featured and the most trusted utility to recover lost data from Windows 7 RC1, Vista, XP, 2003 and 2000 based systems. This hard drive recovery software employs high-end scanning algorithms and provides advanced set of file recovery features. It supports FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 file system drives.
