Of our faculties, our mind is usually the first to go so a calendar is a necessity for our daily use. How else would we be able to remember all of the plans and dates that we made months ago? People plan weddings years in advance and if it were not for calendars we would not be able to keep an organized record of the wedding.
Forgetting where and when to be somewhere can become a repetitive and extremely frustrating experience. People generally do not like being late for appointments and functions regardless of their importance level, so creating a realistic and flexible schedule that is written down on a calendar in a place that you view often throughout the day can prove to be a very valuable technique for an individual.
Do you have a family at home that depends on you? I do and I can tell you firsthand that being in the office all day and going home to a family is very rewarding but also exhausting. Both of my children are in recreational sports and programs of some kind so we are always on the go when I get home from work and on the weekends.
My daughter is thirteen and right now, and she is juggling softball, dance, gymnastics and piano lessons. My son is fifteen and he is currently in football, takes vocal lessons and he is in karate, so as you can see my family’s schedule is extremely hectic. I place everyone’s schedule on the calendar for the week and I place it in common places within the house like the hallways, kitchen refrigerator and the bathroom doors so that we all can see it and no one can say they forgot or didn’t see it; it would be impossible not to see it.
Throughout the day there are so many meetings to attend at work. Most mornings I have about four meetings to attend before noon. While I currently have a secretary, at one point I didn’t and it was extremely chaotic in my office. Being able to create a structured schedule on my calendar was very helpful. I do not want to confuse you and make you think that a calendar can totally replace a secretary or executive assistant but it does get the job done and displays all of your important events, so that you will not miss out on anything.
Daily calendars prevent us from losing our minds. I am always thinking about the next place I have to be, trying to remember birthdays, anniversaries and other things that may be important to others that I have to acknowledge. For those of us who are not good with keeping up with the time, the calendar is a positive source of time reinforcement and management. I never leave the house without my watch but if it were not for my calendar, I would still forget to make important conference calls and pick up dinner. A clock can display what time you are supposed to do something but it cannot remind you of the action and that is where the calendar comes into play; they go hand in hand.
