Aside from being a revolutionary gadget that is taking reading to unexplored levels, the Amazon Kindle DX now has another important role: that of a savior to the ailing newspaper industry. Subscription plunged to such low levels that even the most respected papers have had to fold-up or make huge cuts in the budget, causing people to be out of jobs, removing other sections of the paper, or even coming out on a less frequent basis. Some of the bigger organizations such as the New York Times now publish online versions of the printed paper, and most of them have also taken to having digital versions that can be read through the Kindle.
According to some people, the newspaper industry is also long overdue of such a change. Ever since the first edition of the Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick was published in 1960, the printed paper has been around since then to keep a record of society's everyday happenings. However, with the advent of the digital age, the newspaper business simply needs to conform with these changes, much as other industries have been doing. Resistance to new technology can lead to more losses while choosing to just go with the flow could perhaps lead to a rekindled interest in the newspaper as a source of everyday news.
Still, some may say that it would be a mistake for newspapers to depend on the Amazon Kindle DX. Many publications have already made steps to put out online versions of their papers and read for free by anyone who visits their site. The papers earn through online advertisements. What they are doing now is trying to get additional revenue by offering subscriptions for the Kindle editions of the paper -- the same content people can read free online. There are analysts who think that this is a waste of resources which could only serve to worsen the industry's situation. Whether we admit it or not, newspapers may not be that needed anymore as more and more trained reporters are being replaced by individuals who write blogs, a form of pseudo-journalism.
If more newspapers do turn to the Kindle DX to save their publication, it may spark a renewed interest in the news. The Kindle is already catching on as a phenomenon in the reading world, letting people take thousands of their favorite books wherever they go. By offering live updates to popular subscriptions, the Kindle makes it easier than ever to read the paper. You don't have to get yours out of the mailbox on cold mornings and you don't have to worry about the environmental impact of all that paper. You don't even have to wait for your computer to boot up in order to read your favorite news column. You just turn on the Kindle and it is right there waiting for you.
Now that's what I would call convenience. But is it enough to save the newspaper industry? Only time will tell.
