Lighting is one of the most important aspects of a home. Every person would want to have enough illumination to make it a brighter place.

Nowadays, different lighting systems can be installed. For convenience, most people use artificial lighting. But because of inflation and rising cost of utilities, people have to find ways to bring electricity cost down. For one, there are solar panels. However, they can be too expensive to acquire. You can try to cut down the use of electricity but it may sacrifice your quality of life. So, how do you cut cost without having to forego your usual affairs?

The answer to that is using natural lighting.

Natural lighting or day lighting is one of the most energy efficient additions you can have in your home. It eliminates the use of artificial light in daytime and you can get your lighting needs through the power of the sun. This method uses sunlight. It enters your home through a particular medium and it is evenly distributed to your interiors; hence, sustaining your lighting needs during the day.

There are several options for attaining natural lighting in your homes. The cost of installation can be overwhelming. However, they also drastically improve the aesthetic value of your home. Here are some of them:

1. Skylighting- Skylights are windows on your roof. Light enters your home through the glass and it is scattered all over the place through a white translucent acrylic. This should be installed strategically as it makes your homes susceptible to easy heat gain or loss. It should also be constructed properly to prevent condensation.

2. Solar domes- These are improved versions of the conventional skylighting. In here, light enters your home through solar tubes. This is where the collection takes place and conveys light inside the house through metal diffusers and lens. The advantage of this design is that there is a great control in the sunlight coming inside the house. Light alone is collected in here, not heat. Therefore, one can still maintain the efficiency of your HVAC system.

3. Windows- Basically, every home has natural light coming in their homes through windows. The larger the window you have at home, the more natural light will come in. However, large windows can cause heat build up and glaring. The good news is experts have found a solution for this problem. Light quality and heat control is achieved by the application of glazing techniques like window treatments and films.

One window architectural design that is amazingly used for natural lighting and effects are clerestories. They are wide-paned windows installed on high walls. Natural lighting is achieved without problems with glaring and disruption of privacy.

Other Benefits of Natural Lighting

While natural lighting helps you save money from your electricity bills, it has also other benefits. According to studies, sunlight exposure can lighten mood and attitude. Aside from that, people working under natural lighting are more productive and less grouchy. Therefore, if you want to have a pleasing atmosphere in your home, this is just one way to achieve it.
