Controlling mold in your home
Molds are living organisms but do not classify as either plants or animals. They are basically microscopic living organisms which classify as algae or hyphea. These are a type of fungus, and thrive in warm and moist environments. These types of environments are best suitable for these organisms to multiply and they multiply very fast in such environments. They start as tiny spores and burst and land on favorable surfaces to multiply. Though there are no sure shot ways to eliminate this type of fungus, they can certainly be controlled, as uncontrolled multiplication can lead to diseases in the house, especially in infants and children.
One of the most important reasons for mold to multiply is dampness and warmth. They thrive in areas which have excess water which is stagnant or flowing through continuously. Hence, leaking pipes or seepage in walls always act as perfect conditions for mold growth. Some other areas which are highly conducive to mold growth include beneath the carpet or wash basin, in cupboards if not cleaned and aired regularly or areas around house plants, especially ones that sometimes are over-watered. All it needs for mold to thrive is 24 to 48 hours and favorable conditions. In just 24 hours, a moist environment combined with favorable room-temperature conditions and an organic food source can lead to mold growth. There are some simple steps that you can take to control mold and these are mainly concerned with controlling the humidity inside your home. These simple steps include reducing humidity interiors by allowing enough ventilation and sunlight inside. Also, you can use the fan more than the air conditioner. Make sure that you do not use water coolers, as water coolers are a huge source of humidity inside. Prevent water leaks and if they do occur, repair these immediately. Another step is to make sure that you water proof your home well so that you do not have to face seepages or leakages. Such kinds of issues can cause the walls to become damp, thereby encouraging mold growth.
The environment and the climatic conditions also influence mold growth to a large extent. Areas with high humidity can encourage mold growth and hence if you happen to live in any such area, make sure that you follow all steps to reduce mold growth, as these tend to grow faster in such areas than in other areas. Keeping your washing machines or dishwasher in the utility area, which is sufficiently ventilated, can also reduce mold growth. Materials like wood or mattresses, which are porous in nature, also are a huge source of mold creation and multiplication; hence these need to be discarded, if contaminated.
