Looks great, 2009 has already been a busy year for DirecTV, yet it and dvr families continue to grow at an allegedly non-stop pace. almost all of DBSTalk's Cutting Edge members were extended a chance by DirecTV to field test the newest member of the HR family - the DirecTV HR23. Outwardly theDirecTV HR23 keeps the now familiar styling of its forebears, but that is where the likeness ends. briefly, the DirecTV HR23 is quiet and looks good, has one step less on the install, and naturally, who doesn't like additional recording space? And in that spirit, DBSTalk presents a first observe the DirecTV. The first conspicuous differences between DirecTV HR23 and other HD-DVR receivers is the ability to get all of the high definition channels without B-Band converters. This removes one element that might lead to a critical failure.
Specials and bonuses: DirecTV HR23 Once you power on your DirecTV HR23, you need to spot the boot time is a little quicker than other DVRs. After the DVR boots up, you should notice the picture is a little more clear. The menus, guides and the programming of DirecTV HR23 appear a little sharper than other DVRs. The guide and menus are laid out the same as other DirecTV DVRs. After setting up your 'Series Links" and recording your favorite shows, you will start to notice that your playlist will have a higher proportion of space available. This is thanks to the inclusion of a 500GB hard drive. My feeling is that it seems like I am in a position to record twice as many shows/movies as I was on my HR20-700. With the last HD channels that were broadcast with MPEG2 compression now being broadcast with MPEG4 compression, this will permit for a further additional increase in the programs that can be recorded ( presuming you record the previous MPEG2 channels ) .
As far as performance, I have seen different speeds at different times. Almost all of the time the DirecTV HR23 appears to run as fast (if not quicker ) than my HR20-700. It is a reasonably sure bet that DirecTV will continue to enhance both performance and functionality through Cutting Edge updates.
generally, the DirecTV HR23 is highly recommended for anyone looking to add a new DVR. I would also advocate this DVR DirecTV HR23 for anyone who wants to extend their storage in comparison to their present DVR. When you compare the costs of adding an ESATA hard drive to other lower capacity DVRs and the fact that you lose the storage capacity of your internal drive, the DirecTV HR23 is an excellent cost effective option.
Ah, the pains of progress. But don't worry -- there aren't too many changes here. It looks like the HDD of the HD DVR is similar size as that in the HR22, with the major changes being a few cosmetic tweaks and internal swaps that could amount to better video quality. It seems like there is no OTA tuner, and it will be sporting the same wide band tuners as in the H23. DirecTV released the DirecTV HR23 receiver as a new revolutionary release to beat competition, an update to the current HR2x series.
The enhancements are:
The tuners are BBC / SWM switching, meaning that the BBC ( little converter box hooked to the satellite input) is not required. The receiver detects if the conversion is mandatory, or if the users have an SWM switch immediately. This same technology was lately added to the H23 non-dvr receiver.
