“As you can see ma’am, Big Wally here can take of all of the cobwebs and dust, something I am sure is a problem in old Victorian like this,” Larry the Fuller Brush salesman continued his spiel as he moved the cobweb duster along the high walls of the old house. He had come here confidant of a sale, but the older woman dressed every bit like she belonged in the Victorian era put him ill at ease.
“Here, check out how light this baby is,” he continued, as he tried to push the cobweb duster on the old bitty dressed in a cap and shawl, hoping to get her to appreciate the fine construction of the Fuller Brush product. But, as he tried to place it into her hands she seemed to float away from him as if she was levitating. He tried to approach her again be but she then held her hand up in refusal and continued to watch him from a safe distance.
“Well, okay you will just have to take my word for it then, “ The sales men relented and then continued his demonstration running the cobweb duster up the old mildew aged walls doing his best to catch all old cobwebs and dust that accumulated over the years.
Something told him that the scary old mansion was probably going to be a waste of time. Gray and dilapidated, alone on top of hill, facing the cemetery, Larry the Fuller Brush salesman half expected to see the Mystery Machine parked in front of the place. Still, with the economy and the internet eating up the sales, Larry was desperate and decided to take the chance. He had knocked on the door only once, before it creaked open and he saw the spooky old woman in the shawl standing there, silently waiting for him.
“There, look at that,” Larry said as he lowered the cobweb duster to reveal the cleaned section of high ceiling which actually looked kind of charming sans dust and cobwebs. He then turned to proudly reveal his handiwork to the old woman.
“So how many do…” Larry stopped in mid-sentence as he realized that the woman was no longer there, had seemed to vanish leaving the Fuller Brush salesman all alone in the spooky old mansion.
As he drove away from the place he could have swore that he saw her in his rearview mirror watching him from the upstairs window. It was not until a week later that he learned that the old house by the graveyard had been empty for twenty years.
