The Big Apple. New York City. The city that never sleeps. For centuries, New York has been the destination of millions upon millions of people who dreamed of having a better life, to have a crack at getting a chunk out of that juicy apple. But the reality is, it is not what you might expect.
Moving to Manhattan might sound exciting now but when you actually get there, you might not like what you see.
New York is an ideal place to live if you want to live in the fast lane, where everything happens so fast and time flies. It is, since it was founded, a very multi-cultural city where you will meet people from all walks of life with different histories, different social backgrounds and attitudes and definitely different opinions. You will be able to interact with people coming from every corner of the earth so be prepared for diversity if you decide to live there. You would be able to tell right now and from the city’s reputation that NYC would be very crowded, dirty and unfriendly. New
movers in Bronx can probably attest to that while
movers in Queens will probably be proud they did not end up in a place as ‘ghetto’ as the Bronx. Also, living in NY will be expensive. The cabs alone will cost you a fortune if you don’t use the subway. Schooling for your children, if you have any, will bleed you dry especially if you enroll them in the private schools. There are some good public schools although your kids will most probably have to travel long commutes to get there. And then there’s the thing about the housing. If you are not a multi-millionaire, you will probably get a place that is only a quarter of the size of the place you used to live in and you are paying the same amount in rent.
But it’s not all bad. It has some of the best museums, theaters in the world and is one of the fashion capitals of the world. New York has continually cultivated some of the best minds the world has ever seen and just from the atmosphere of the place, you will probably find yourself transformed as well.
So once you get there, where should you live? There’s five boroughs to choose from: there’s Manhattan or ‘the City’, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. Each borough has its own unique charm and personality so read up first before deciding which place you’d want to live in. Let’s say for now you picked Brooklyn. If there’s a competent
