Genital warts and genital herpes are both viral infections and they both lead to lesions or warts in the genital area. Both these diseases are incurable but their symptoms are treatable. They are both sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s).

Genital warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) whereas genital herpes is caused by Herpes Simplex II virus. Genital warts are one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases and they have different appearances. They can look like a regular wart you might get on your hand or they can be pink or red. They can also resemble a cauliflower. They are usually soft.

In men they can be found on the penis or scrotum. In women they can be found on the vulva, anus or cervix. They thrive in moist areas in the genital and can spread to the groin area in both sexes. Sometimes they can burn or itch.

Genital warts are treated with topical creams and sometimes surgery. The usual prescribed creams include Podofilox, Imiquimod and Trichloroacetic acid. The surgeries to remove the warts include electrocautery, laser and cryosurgery.

Electocautery and laser surgeries burn the wart off. Cryosurgery freezes the wart and it falls off. Surgery is the second line of treatment. Sometimes an antiviral drug called Interferon is injected directly into the wart. This is most often used if warts have returned after other treatments. Even with treatment there is no guarantee that the warts will not reappear.

Genital Herpes treatment is done with oral antivirals Zovirax, Famvir and Valtrex. These medications can have side effects such as headaches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. However, there are over the counter and herbal remedies that do not have any side effects that can be also used as genital herpes treatment.

Dyamiclear is a topical treatment that claims to kill the active virus. It is applied directly to the lesions. H-away and H-prevention is another nonprescription topical formula that relieves symptoms and helps prevent future outbreaks.

People who are having frequent outbreaks should have suppressive therapy. Suppressive therapy is taking oral medications daily to prevent outbreaks. Other people take the medications just when they have an outbreak.

Genital herpes and genital warts are both incurable viruses but they are both treatable. Genital warts and genital herpes treatment can help diminish the discomfort of current outbreaks and suppressive therapy can help prevent future outbreaks.

Genital herpes is spread through sexual secretions. Genital warts is spread from skin to skin contact. Condoms should be used in either case but they are not 100 percent effective in preventing genital warts. Genital warts can be anywhere in the genital area and therefore just a condom will not protect against the skin to skin contact.

Genital herpes and genital warts are both viruses that when they are not active they lie dormant in your system ready to strike again. They are not curable but there are several effective genital herpes treatments.
