Dear Elaine

Is it bad etiquette to recycle gifts? I received 3 gifts for my birthday this year and they’re really not that bad but they’re things that I’m just not into and haven’t used yet. I have a friend and 2 family members in mind that would probably appreciate them more than I do but I don’t want to seem cheap.

Stacey F.

Dear Stacy,

The one thing that stands out about your question is that you believe your friend and family members would appreciate the gift. That’s the best way to gauge whether or not you should re-gift a particular gift.

If it’s something that is nice but just a “not-exactly-you” gift, it is ok to give it to someone else who you KNOW would enjoy it. Now this does not mean pass on things that you wouldn’t dare actually pay money for. What I mean is to think of someone who would not be offended if they received this particular gift from you.

So go-ahead re-gift honey! But be thoughtful in your choices, and be sure not to re-gift within the same circle of people.

Dear Elaine,

I’m dating someone new. It’s only been a few months so what type of gift should I get without seeming like it’s too much or too little? Or should I just not get them a gift at all and just stick with a card?

Pamela C.

Dear Pamela,

Yes girl the “dating the brand new” guy thing surely make you stop and think twice before making any sudden moves but thinking twice is good thing. It will really help you in the long run.

So think twice about conversations you’ve had and think twice about things or places your date has said he enjoys. Then choose your gift in moderation. Meaning absolutely avoid anything expensive or extravagant. You’ll just freak him out. Stick with a very unpretentious gift along the line of the gift exchange among coworkers. Just be more intentional in your selection. Even a (well thought out) gift card placed inside a card is good too. Remember to just keep it thoughtful and simple.
