Information about the
Walther P22 and the
Walther P22 laser can be found at SpentBrass.
The Walther P22 has many appealing factors. Perhaps one of its most alluring qualities are the numerous accessories that are available for the pistol. Of the various accessories, an under-barrel laser is one of the most popular.
There are a few different lasers available specifically for the P22 including one that's manufactured by Walther and another by a company called Viridian. The search for a laser often ends with the tough choice between these two popular options. Each laser has its strengths and weaknesses and before you can decide which one is right for you, you need to think take into account how you'll be using the laser. Will you be carrying the P22 with the laser attached? Will you be using it outdoors in direct sunlight or at an indoor range?
The factory laser by Walther has a small profile and fits the P22 perfectly. It doesn't hang over the P22's frame on either side of the pistol or in front of it. This compact design makes the factory laser a great choice if you're going to be carrying the P22 with the laser attached. There are a number of different holsters on the market that will accommodate the Walther P22 with a factory laser but won't fit the larger lasers available.
The Walther laser produces a red beam that is clearly visible in most situations that don't involve targets that are in direct sunlight. The red dot laser is clearly visible during the day at distances of thirty feet or more so long as the target is partially shaded.
The Walther laser takes two 1.5 volt watch batteries that will power the unit for quite some time. The batteries are inserted in the bottom of the laser via a small plastic hatch that's kept in place by a small clip. The laser is turned on and off by a small switch that's located on the right side of the unit. This switch is easily accessible to right-handed shooters by reaching their index finger forward when holding the pistol.
Another popular laser for the Walther P22 is manufactured by a company called Viridian. The main difference between Viridian's product and Walther's is the Viridian laser produces a green beam that is brighter and more visible than the factory laser's red beam. The green beam is even visible in direct sunlight at substantial distances.
The drawback to the Viridian laser is its large size. It is noticeably larger than the factory laser and when mounted it extends past the edges of the P22's frame on the left, right and in front of the pistol. The Viridian green laser is tougher to conceal than the factory laser because of its larger size. The size of the Viridian product also makes it tough to find a suitable holster. Most holsters that accommodate the factory laser will not fit the one made by Viridian.
The last consideration between these two products is price. The factory laser is a bit less expensive and typically costs between $100 and $120. The Viridian laser typically costs between $160 and $180.
