If you just adopted your very first pet rabbit you are probably wondering how to litter train a rabbit.I will share with you some tips that I learned with my own rabbit and that are going to make your life easier.Just keep in mind that the results are going to be differents weather you are trying to train a baby rabbit or an older one.

First thing get a plastic pan that you will be able to put in and out of the cage. I bought some small dish pans at the dollar store and they are just perfect.Put the pan in a corner of the cage and always leave it there. The rabbit will soon get use to go in and will go back where the smell is.

Then when you let him out of the cage, restrict him first to a small room and take the litter box out of the cage. If he makes some droppings on the floor, take them and show the rabbit that they belong in the box.Make sure you give him a reward every time he goes into it. But make it a special reward, something he would never get otherwise. My rabbit just loves daisies and I would keep some in a vase on the kitchen table.Every time she goes in her box I would give her one,but never on any other occasions.

Now This is important, If you got a baby rabbit, it will be easy to train him at first. But by about 3 months old, rabbits reach their sexual maturity, means they will soon be ready to mate. They will start marking their territory all over the house hoping an other rabbit will smell them and come and meet with them. Even if your rabbit was doing great with the litter box before, their instincts will take over.

This is why many people get discouraged at this point and give up.Most don't understand why the rabbit is doing this and think that they don't know how to litter train a pet rabbit. They ended up in their cages all the time or at the animal shelter or worse, outside by themselves.

A house rabbit has to be spayed or neutered to use properly her or his litter box.It is also suitable for the health of your animal, but can be a little expensive. So if you are considering adopting a rabbit,an older rabbit that has already been fixed would be a wise choice.

Here's some good tips about the litter box:

- Put one in each room where your rabbit is allowed to go at first.

-Never put any cat litter or smelly wood chips in it,it is toxic for your rabbit.

-Use litter made of recycled newspaper, safe for the rabbit.

-Give the rabbit a special treat he loves every time he uses the litter box.

-Having your rabbit spayed or neutered is a must.

I had something funny happening with my rabbit.I use to put the litter box in the kitchen but she would keep do her business on the bathroom floor.Even as obvious as it was, it took me a while to finally realise that she wanted was to go to the bathroom like everybody else.So I put the litter box in the bathroom and since she always goes in it!

I hope you found this information helpful and I would like to share more tips with you on and a lot more.So fell free to visit my blog at http://www.petrabbitcare.blogspot.com and enjoy learning about your pet rabbit.
