In recent years, wireless internet has become all the rage. It allows us to be connected anytime, anywhere, granting a new and innovative level of mobility. Laptops can be used to connect to the internet in airports, restaurants, libraries and a number of other places. Smart phones like the BlackBerry and the iPhone allow us to check our e-mail and go online even on subways and trains. With 4G technology, mobile air cards and wireless broadband, wire-free internet connection is faster and more available than ever.

It is impossible to deny the convenience of wireless internet. Nevertheless, the technology is not perfect. It is still a relatively new development and therefore brings with it a series of glitches that are still being worked out. How can you know if wireless internet is right for you? This is a question with a lot of answers in a lot of areas.

First and foremost, let’s talk about wireless internet in the home. Though this may seem like an obvious option, it may not always be the best choice. Before investing in a modem and router to install wireless in your house, do some price and speed comparing on your own. Consider several wireless providers, and talk to friends and neighbors to hear about their experiences. In a home with several computers, wireless may be a great idea. In a one-computer home, however, it may not be all that necessary (especially if that one computer is a laptop). Before making the change to wireless in your household, make sure that the investment is worth it. Utility, signal strength, speed and price are all things you should consider.

It is a good idea to next spend some time thinking about wireless outside of the home. Wireless air cards for laptops are a must. Even if you think that you won’t need one, you may be surprised to find out how much you’ll appreciate being able to connect cable-free later on. Unless you are absolutely sure that you’ll never want to go online at an airport, in a café, in a class or at a meeting, go ahead and install a wireless option in your laptop computer. You never know when it’ll come in handy.

Along the same lines, you’ll have to think about wireless internet on your phone as well. While wireless on a laptop is quite practical, for some, wireless on a phone is extravagant. If it is important to you to be able to read e-mails while commuting or away from a computer, go ahead and look into a smart phone. If you think a phone with wireless sounds like a neat idea but aren’t sure what you’d use it for, go ahead and hold off. You don’t want to be too tempted to be constantly checking your phone (you may already do that enough as it is). Wireless internet for your cell phone can be a great idea for those who really need it.

Wireless is definitely the wave of the future. Even so, it must be approached with prudence and thought by consumers everywhere.
