Starting an online business involves much more than just creating and publishing a website. It is essential that you attract qualified visitors to your site. You need to identify your client base and what type of people are interested in your product and in a position to buy.

Your website needs to be attractive, accurate and have credibility. You can not underestimate the value of good graphics and power selling words. You focus must be to sell your product and not on waiting for potential customers to knock on your door. You site should be specific and it is important to select enticing and familiar keywords and phrases that will adequately describe your product to your visitors. Using these keywords repeatedly will often increase your website rankings, searchability and popularity.

When you are confident that your website is ready it is necessary to check for any potential problems, broken or missing links, navigation problems, etc. Your site must be structured in such a way that both an experienced web user and a newbie can navigate it with relative ease and be able to use it effectively.

Your site should also be linked to similar and popular well searched sites. This will increase online traffic to your site. People searching the internet are quite often in a hurry and not interested in a lot of hype on a site. Always bear that in mind when constructing the content and length of your website. There is nothing worse than having a qualified and interested visitor to your site turned off by too much and unnecessary information.

You might want to consider having your website reviewed or possibly even designed by professionals. They can offer tips on how to make a site took smart and how to entice customers with rewards or free offers. However professional advice does not come cheap.

Of course it’s not just your website that determines your traffic. You also need to advertise and maybe even “buy traffic”. I personally don’t put much faith in programs that offer visitors for a fee. They are often untargeted and/or unqualified. But many internet marketers swear by this method.

I also don’t like pay-per-click advertising. I’ve found it cost ineffective. It is expensive and overly competitive. Yes you will get in front of a targeted audience if you have selected the right keywords, but even if you do make a profit, you likely will find that your ROI (return on investment, and that includes your time and effort) is very poor.

Experienced internet marketers are very savvy when it comes to traffic generation. They know that the product is important, but so is the website promoting the product. They also know that advertising is not the only way to drive qualified traffic to your website.

Google Adwords or MSN Ad Center or Yahoo Search Marketing or any of the other search engine programs ARE NOT THE ANSWER to getting traffic to your site. There are better ways and they are FREE!
