Wondering what the causes of yeast infections are? Did you know that taking birth control pills can lead to this infection? Another thing that can make you more susceptible to yeast infections is using douches. Kind of surprising isn't it?
When up to 40% of women douche and 25% take the pill it is definitely a concern. Especially the douching. Much information has been released that provides support that douching is not a healthy choice for women. This isn't to say that women using these products will get yeast infections, but they are more prone to get them than women who don't.
Of course these are not the only causes. When new or a higher quantity of yeast is present in the vaginal region yeast infections can occur. There is good bacteria that is protective in nature, but the taking of antibiotics can destroy that protection. Antibiotics are prescribed by your doctor for respiratory, sinus or urinary tract infections. When this occurs the new yeast can invade and irritate the vaginal lining, which also is called vaginitis.
Other drugs and treatments that can lower your immune system and make the occurrence of a yeast infection easier is prednisone or other cortisone medications. Damage to the inner vagina from chemo-therapy can increase the risk as well.
Diabetes mellitus and pregnancy are also known to increase the risk of vaginal yeast infections in women. As mentioned before these treatments and conditions will not cause the infection but can provide more of an opportunity for the infection to develop.
This is not considered a sexually transmitted disease (STD) since it can occur naturally and not just from sexual contact. But it can be spread through sexual activity.
