One of these uncommon but curable STDs is Chancroid. This is a bacterial infection that results in sores on the mouth, throat, lips, anus, tongue, vagina, or penis. You can get chancroid sores or spread them through skin-to-skin contact with open sores or from hands that have touched a sore. Painful open sores on the genitals, and, in some cases, swollen and tender lymph nodes in the groin may often appear. If this is not treated right away, the patient may become more susceptible in acquiring other STDs. Treatment may be given with the use of antibiotics such as Zithromax or Cipro.
Another uncommon STD is the bacterial vaginosis or more known as BV. BV results from overgrowth of one of several organisms that are normally present in the vagina, upsetting the natural balance of vaginal bacteria. Usually, good bacteria outnumber bad bacteria in the vagina. But if bad bacteria become too numerous, they upset the balance and bacterial vaginosis results. Antibiotics like Metronidazole may be given to the patient.
And lastly, another infection often associated with sexual activities is scabies. This is actually a mild parasitic infection. This is transmitted through close contact or through sleeping in bedding or wearing clothes that are infested. Rarely, holding or shaking hands can transmit scabies. Signs of a scabies infestation include intense itching, or small bumps or a rash on the penis, between the fingers, on buttocks, breasts, wrists, thighs, or around the navel. Since this involves skin infection, creams and lotions containing permethrin should be applied onto the infected area.
Though all of these are curale, one should still take action by having it detected and treated right away. All STDs, whatever the type is may give serious health damage to the patient if left long untreated. Such complications include pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), sterility, ectopic pregnancy, blindness, different cancers, fetal and infant death, birth defects and mental retardation.
All STDs may be detected and confirmed only through an STD testing. Local STD testing is done in a local hospital or health center. This may be conducted by a laboratory test of the patient’s urine or blood sample. Physical examination may also be needed to check on some signs and symptoms on the patient. The results may be obtained after a few days or weeks. After diagnosis, treatment should follow immediately. This is to prevent further health damage to the patient brought about by the disease.
