The number one reason cited for cats being thrown out of the house is that it is displaying an unruly behavior which many cat owners find totally unacceptable i.e. they pee all over the house instead of using the litter box.

The truth is that many a times, the underlying cause of such a behavior in cats is associated with the litter box itself. Simply by resolving the litter box problem can often stop such a behavior in most cats. But first and foremost, you have to ensure that the problem is not brought about by some medical problems or urine marking. Have your veterinarian do a health check on your cat. Only when you rule these out, then can you go about resolving the litter-box problem.

Resolving the litter box problem

  1. The number of litter box that you provide must correspond to the number of cats you have in your house. Each cat should have their own litter box and as such, if you have 3 cats, you should provide 3 litter-box and not just one.

  2. The litter box should be placed in a quiet location away from heavy traffic or noisy areas. These could be somewhere near the washing machines, the dryer. Cats detest noise and would not felt at ease using the litter box placed in such location. Also, avoid putting the litter box near to your cats’ food and water bowls.
  3. If it’s possible, place a litter box in the spot where your cat has eliminated or soiled. If not, then have the spot cleaned using an enzymatic cleaner to remove the urine odor thoroughly. This would prevent your cat making its way back to the same spot.
  4. Make inappropriate elimination areas less appealing to your cat by sticking some double-sided tapes, tin foil or putting spiky mat.
  5. Keep the litter box clean at all times. Scoop at least once a day and have it thoroughly cleaned at least once a week using warm water and baking soda. Replace completely with fresh cat litter. Do not use scented soap or cleaners as some cats may have an aversion to the scent and may result in them not wanting to use the litter box anymore

  6. Last but not least, select your choice of a cat litter carefully. Choose one that your cat prefers. Most cats like shallow bed of litter so provide one to two inches of the litter in the litter box rather than more. Also, most cats prefers unscented cat litter over scented ones and some may prefer clumping litter over the non-clumping type. To help your cat pick her preferred litter, provide her with a choice by using a few types of cat litter in different litter box. She’ll only use the one she likes best.
