Employees are the lifeblood of any organization, big or small. If you look at it closely, an employee is anyone hired by the company - from the janitor to the CEO. A company cannot exist without even one employee unless you are doing a one-man show.

Each employee is assigned with certain responsibilities that become a part of the bigger overall business operation. He is trained to perform that task well and with due care in order for the company to achieve its goals. Whether the company is engaged in trade, manufacturing, or a processing industry, the employee must always keep quality and speed in mind in delivering the required output from him.

In every organization there is always the existence of both diligent and carefree employees. Sometimes, they are easily recognized but more often they are indistinguishable. It is very hard to rely on hearsays in determining which employees are doing their jobs or not. Succumbing to such nonsense would only create a feeling of animosity among employees and would eventually destroy the very foundation that you are trying to build.

One way to ascertain the performance of employees is by using performance management tools that would give you an almost accurate assessment as to how the employee has done his job for a certain period. Some employees actually resist this kind of evaluation. For those who are doing their job well, this could be beneficial for them and the reasons of those opposing such evaluation are very much obvious.

Employee performance management should be done in a periodic basis. This primarily depends on the nature of the business. If you are on a per project basis kind of business, then it is good to do the evaluation at the end of every project. If the cycle of business runs in a year-round operation, you could always choose a favorable date to evaluate employees. You could have it on a quarterly or semi-annual basis, or as the need arises.

It is a very important factor for a business to determine how the employees are doing through employee performance management. Any act of the employee directly affects the success of the business and therefore, good and productive employees spell the overall accomplishment of a business.
