Evaluation and Management (E/M) coding is the process by which physician-patient encounters are assigned five digit CPT codes for the purpose of billing medical claim.

To ensure correct E/M coding, you’ll need to establish the place of service where one needs to use the code, check the age of the patient, decide the sub category for E/M coding no matter whether the patient is new or established, check for contributory factors like counseling, coordination of care, nature of presenting problem, etc.

E/M coding levels : The descriptors for the level of E/M services recognize seven components which are used in defining the levels of E/M services. They are history, examination, medical decision making, counseling, coordination of care, nature of presenting problem, and time. History, examination and medical decision making are the main components in selecting the level of E/M services.

You submit E/M claims every day for your physician, but often this seemingly easy task may turn out to be confusing. With the multiple E/M coding levels to go with the different components that have even more subcategories, these coding confusions could be costing your practice dear.

You can stay on top of your E/M coding by getting yourself a Certified Evaluation and Management Coder (CEMC) certification. To add a CEMC credential to your name, you’ll need to sit for AAPC’s CEMC examination, which has been developed by a team of leading E/M coding professionals.

The exam will test you on the three vital components with focus on MDM and other subjective aspects of the documentation guidelines, rules and regulations of Medicare billing, time-based coding, among a host of other topics.

To be better placed to take the exam, go for a CEMC training camp and bolster your chances!
