A five minute glance through a lifestyle magazine should be all it takes to realize the immense cost that replacing bathrooms can be. And for many, particularly in the current global economy, this may be a little restrictive. But with some applied thought and a little work, a fantastic new look can be achieved at a reasonable spend.
Often, people simply get a little bored with their bathroom and trying to look at it with a fresh set of eyes will show that there is not a great deal wrong with the suite. Indeed, it could be something as simple as replacing the bulbs in your light fittings; just adding a splash of color; or even a weekly supply of fresh flowers!
Because of this, simply by installing new faucets, handles and shower heads etc, can have a tremendous result. To really get an instant effect, look for something completely different to what you have presently. And if this is to be the only expense incurred; you could maybe make that trip to a designer showroom after all!
But if, as discussed above, keeping costs in check is key; check out your local salvage yard. Spending an afternoon sorting through other people's discarded items here can be something akin to a treasure trove. Highlights can include beautiful brass fittings, modern brushed chrome and even hidden gems harking back to the Art Deco bathrooms.
If you really are struggling with how your suite looks and want to make a drastic change; replacing the panel along the side of your tub could be just the thing. Replacing it with a new plastic panel will be fine, and give a cleaner finish. But for something a little different, look for glass, metal, wood and even reclaimed railings to give a unique feel.
Do remember though that it may be necessary to get to the pipes under the tub at times, so ensure the panel can easily be removed. Alternatively, provision for an access panel could be included, though this may be more trouble that it is really worth.
Possibly the simplest change to make, (which will get you an awful lot of bang for your buck), is the addition of a new mirror. Here, size really matters, so get the biggest you can justifiably afford. Space, character and reams of light will be your reward, whilst the scene can really be enhance with complimentary lighting.
If you have tired, broken or delaminated tiles, these can really bring bathrooms down. Rather than replace the entire walling; look to replace just those damaged areas; perhaps with accent colored tiles. The addition of a nee backsplash could also have a similar positive effect.
These are just some tips for updating bathrooms; and you are sure to think of more. When you are happy with the look; spend a little more time accessorizing the space. If possible, incorporate new towels and facecloths; again with those all important accent colors. Mats and rugs, whether bamboo, rattan or seagrass; can also add a finishing flourish that reflects both modernity and traditionalism.
