When it comes to the television, there’s often so many programming options available that you don’t know where to begin. The advent of satellite TV only furthers the “what to watch” dilemma, upping channel offerings from tens to hundreds. With so much out there, how can you know where to begin? How can you tell what’s worth watching and what should be skipped?
Often times, some of the best shows on television are those that have already been around for a while. Their formulas have been tested and their plotlines have thickened as audiences have caught on and grown.
You may worry that it is too late to get in on the action yourself in the case of many shows, but this is not the case – at least not anymore. With the availability of season DVDs and live stream internet reruns, it’s never too late to get up to speed and to get in on a great show that may not be new to everyone but that is new to you.
What shows are worth getting into on your HD TV this year?
1. Lost
Entering into its last season, this season of Lost is sure to be a thriller. Lost is a television sensation that has kept millions of viewers on the edge of their seats for five seasons. The plotline is intense and intriguing and leaves you always wanting more. Be sure to watch all previous episodes ahead of time, though, or you might have trouble following what’s going on.
2. The Jay Leno Show
Though this isn’t necessarily the most traditional type of oldie, it is one to watch. Leno, a late night television icon, is now hosting a nightly primetime program. The formula is much unchanged, though it is more concise and compact. There is no real need to watch past episodes to get caught up. That said, watching past episodes of Leno on the Tonight Show is a great way to take a walk down memory lane or to get to know this beloved American comic.
3. Mad Men
Mad Men is an AMC period drama sure to spice up your satellite TV. Set in a fictional New York advertising agency in the 1960s, the show provides a provocative look into the era. Acclaimed for both its historical authenticity and visual style, Mad Men has won several awards and has drawn audiences from across America.
4. Desperate Housewives
Though no longer as innovative as in its initial seasons, this feminist comedy is one you won’t want to miss any longer. The star-studded cast that includes Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman remains as sensational today as it was a few years ago. Creator Mark Cherry has produced the perfect combination of comedy and drama to keep this show going for a while – so why not get hooked now?
5. Two and a Half Men
The leading comedy series in American television, watch one episode of Two and a Half Men and you’ll know what all of the buzz is about. Filled with quick one-liners and outrageous physical comedy, Jon Cryer and Charlie Sheen shine in this half-hour comedy. Available on both DVD and on the internet, you won’t be able to stop watching this comedy series once you’ve started.
