Castlevania 2 is a classic platformer for the original Nintendo. You start out as a vampire hunter and your goal is to obtain items, explore the world, kill the undead, and eventually kill Dracula. This game has a couple differences from your average adventure game. It had an experience system which increases your hit points, and magical items that can make your hero much better.
The items you obtain throughout the game are critical to how well you can damage the normal enemies and bosses. For instance, as you progress you will obtain items like better whips. In many cases you’ll need to purchase your better items from shops. Some of these shops are hidden within towns and can be quite difficult to find when playing the game for the first time. They will sell you items like better whips, garlic, holy water, steaks and many others.
As you kill enemies, they will drop hearts which are your experience and cash system. In order to level or obtain better weapons you need to have hearts. The more difficult the enemy the higher percentage chance that they will drop larger hearts or half of a larger heart. The larger heart or heart half the more hearts it is worth on your character/inventory screen.
Although this game came out in the 1980s and has really bad graphics in comparison to today’s games, this is definitely one worth going back and playing. It’ll give you a great idea of what kids liked to do in 1980. In addition, this game was considered cool for its time and due to the amount of kids who played this one it has made it to a classic status. Out of the 800 or so Nintendo games that were made, I’d consider this game in the top 100 and worth playing to see the progression of adventure games over time. This game is fairly similar to Wizards and Warriors so if you like this game you will like that series as well.
