Also known as sexually transmissible diseases or infections, these types of diseases indicate significant and remarkable probability of being transmitted through sexual contact. There are varying indications of the presence of the STD but it is more likely to transmit infection with the presence of the signs depending on the type of sexually transmitted disease a particular person has. While it is also possible to spread the infection even with the absence of the symptoms of STD, the chance is greater when signs and symptoms of that particular STD like herpes are present. This makes it crucial to identify the signs and symptoms of many common STDs in order to alarm the person when consultation is highly essential for early diagnosis and treatment of the condition before it aggravates. • Chlamydia
Known as one of the most common STDs that can be cured, Chlamydia infection might be present without the knowledge of the infected person at first because of the lack of initial signs and symptoms indicating its presence in the body. It primarily affects the cervix in women and penile urethra in men. Pain during sexual intercourse and a penile or vaginal discharge may or may not be present.

• Gonorrhea
Considered as a bacterial STD, gonorrhea signs and symptoms may include some or all of the following: burning sensation when urinating and penile discharge that may range from white, green or yellow in color.

• Trichomoniasis
This is most common in young and sexually active women. Men may also get infected but the infection is most common in women. There is a possibility that the condition would be mistaken to be a yeast infection because of the similar signs and symptoms manifested by both conditions including foamy vaginal discharge, painful sexual intercourse, strong vaginal odor, and itchiness within the vaginal region.

• Syphilis
Syphilis usually presents with its characteristic sores or blisters usually on the mouth, external genitals, rectum and vagina. This STD may lead to serious complications when left untreated. Vanishing of the sores do not necessarily mean that the infection is gone. In fact, it even makes the infection hard to detect and cure.

• Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
This common STD may not produce any symptom even if the person has been infected for quite a while. However, there are cases when genital warts may appear and consultation would lead to the diagnosis of HPV.

• HIV/AIDS
It is no longer a secret that HIV is the virus that is directly related to AIDS. HIV has very few and even no symptom presentation. But the fact remains that being infected with the virus lowers the body’s defense against other infections and the likelihood to develop the dreadful AIDS.

• Herpes

There are two forms of Herpes known as HSV1 and HSV2. The first one presents with cold sores while the second one manifests sores in the genital area of the person infected with this viral STD. However, there are also instances when there are no presentations of sores or other symptoms in an infected individual. Before the appearance of the characteristic sores, itching and tingling sensation would be felt within the site of infection. This may not be present in every infected person but to some, this would indicate that the sore would soon surface as an indication of the STD.

There are still plenty of STDs that affect the sexually active population. The previously mentioned are only few and the top most common in this category of diseases acquired by sexual contact. Having a clear idea of the signs and symptoms of common STDs is helpful in your desire to avoid, treat, and prevent the recurrence of these infections.
