Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease. It is also called a silent disease because the symptoms appear very late in some people. Chlamydia is more common amongst teenagers. A bacterium causes this infection, which is passed on by sexual partners. This is an easily treatable disease if treated at an early stage. If allowed to progress, it can cause serious damage. Chlamydia - Symptoms

Most of the women do not show any symptoms. Also about half of the affected men do not show any symptoms. In women, symptoms may include- burning during urination, discharge from vagina, lower back or abdominal pain, pain during sexual contact, and bleeding between the menstrual cycles. In men, the symptoms may be- burning pain during urination, discharge from genitals, swollen testicles or pain in testicles, etc.

Chlamydia – Causes

This is a bacterial infection of the genitals and anus in men and women. This is a contagious disease. A bacterium chlamydia trachomatis causes chlamydia. It is transferred from partner to partner by vaginal, oral, or anal sex. The bacterium is passed when the mucous membrane comes in contact with infected secretion. Oral chlamydia is also reported though it is less frequent than genital. Any mucous membrane (membrane that does not have skin) can get infected with the bacteria if it comes in contact with the infected fluid. Young women and teenage girls are more prone to get chlamydia because their cervix is not fully matured. The chances of getting chlamydia increase if a person has multiple sexual partners. An infected mother can pass on chlamydia to her baby.

Chlamydia - Treatment

The diagnosis is generally confirmed by taking a swab from the affected place and sending it to the lab. NAATs (nucleic acid amplification tests) is a very reliable test that is done with swabs from the affected area.

Treatment is done with antibiotics and the disease can be fully cured. Treatment should be taken by your sexual partner/partners also, otherwise you will get the infection again.

It is always preferred that if one partner is diagnosed with Chlamydia, boththe partners should receive the treatment. This ensures complete safety for both forever. Otherwise the disease may recur. It is best to visit the doctor together if you suspect Chlamydia.

Chlamydia - Prevention

1. Use condoms
2. Stop having multiple partners
3. Get regular screening done for all the STDs. Consult your doctor about frequency of the screening test.
4. Women should stop douching because it kills good bacteria.
