The most common cat parasites are ear mites, fleas, and Feline Toxoplasmosis. These conditions are not only annoying but can adversely affect the health of your cat. It is very important that the proper steps be taken to keep your feline from getting these parasites and, if they do get them, that you take immediate action to rid your pet of them. Cats get parasites from being out of doors or being exposed to other cats that have picked them up out of doors.
Ear mites are not always easily spotted until they begin showing around the visible part of the ear. One way to tell when a feline has ear mites is that they will shake their head as though clearing their ears and also scratch at their ears. Once you notice black ear wax in your cat's ears you can be sure that they have had ear mites for some time. If left untreated ear mites can lead to serious infection and loss of hearing in a cat. If you do not have the funds to take your pet to the doctor immediately there are many products on the market to deal with ear mites. In addition, there are many home remedies on the internet which effectively treat ear mites. It is important though that if the condition does not clear up that you make a doctor's appointment and have your pet seen. This is also important if an infection has resulted from the ear mites and your feline needs an antibiotic to clear up the infection as well as get rid of the ear mites.
Fleas are seasonal in most areas and infestations vary from severe to very mild in many locations. In order to protect your feline from getting fleas it is important that they be kept in doors and treated with flea shampoo during their regular grooming. If you do not bathe your cat and you let your cat wander out of doors regularly, you will want to take your pet to the doctor where you can get long term flea repellant which will protect your cat. If fleas are left unmolested they will infest the carpeting of a home and can make your family ill. It is important that if your pet has fleas that you not only have the pet treated for the fleas but also treat your home for flea infestation. It is important to note that fleas do not just "go away." Flea infestations must be treated and areas sprayed to keep fleas from invading your yard and home.
Feline Toxoplasmosis is a parasite that affects both animals and humans so it is vital that the parasite be stopped before it attacks.
