In a move intended to strengthen the economic resilience of the American economy now and in the future, President Barack Obama announced a series of initiatives intended to get American mothers back in the classroom.
One of the most significant components of the President's plan to help the mothers of America improve their educations was the creation of the "Moms Return to School" Government Grant Program, which is not only available to mothers who attend classes in a conventional college campus environment, but also for those who choose to attend accredited online institutions, allowing stay-at-home moms the opportunity to pursue higher education as well. A $10,000 scholarship targeted at moms is available through the website Scholarships4moms.net, for which males are also eligible.
In addition, the President and Congress have increased the maximum limit for Pell Grants, from $4050 to $5100, and many experts expect the limit on Pell Grants to be further increased in the near future. Pell Grants aid poorer students to afford school, and unlike student loans Pell Grants do not have to be repaid, they are free money to help pay for your education.
And if all of this is not enough to entice mothers to return to school, due to their concerns about finances and about being able to work, take care of their families, and still afford to return to college, The American Opportunity Tax Credit exempts the first $4000 used for higher education.
The current economic crisis is not expected to be entirely resolved for years, perhaps as long as a decade. Those with higher educations will fare better during these tough times, and will find themselves in greater demand as the recession declines and employment levels rise. One of the most challenging groups to encourage towards seeking higher education are the mothers of America. President Obama and Congress have taken the first substantial steps towards addressing this neglected demographic, and their efforts will no doubt improve the lives of millions of moms around the nation, and help to build an even stronger economy for the future.
