Clearing and cleaning of the litter box is not a chore that anybody would look forward to doing. The gluey, smelly stuff that one finds in the box could well make anyone lose his or her appetite. I think all would agree that the less frequent you have to handle the litter box, the better it is. So a common question that is frequently asked is - How often should the litter box be cleaned?

But before answering this question, lets look at the problem that one would expect should your cat’s litter box be left un-cleared and dirty.

Cats are by nature, clean animals and you can tell that just by their constant self-grooming. They won’t be able to tolerate a dirty litter box very well. So the most common problem that one would see is that your cat would start avoiding the litter box. They will pee and poo anywhere else in the house except doing it in their litter box!

Unless you are ready to give your cat the boot, you have to make sure that you keep their kitty box clean at all times. If you have only one cat in your house, then clearing the box of wastes daily is expected and the whole box should be wash thoroughly and fresh litter be filled at least once a week. However, in a multi-cat household, then more frequent clearing and cleaning is warranted to keep your kitties happy and your house “odor free”.

Use baking soda to help in getting most of the urine odor in the box but don’t use bleach. Bleach will eliminate the odor completely and your cats may not like this. They are drawn by the odor of the waste to the litter box and when you eliminate the smell completely, they may end up doing their business elsewhere.

For those of you who are often away from home, then you may benefit most from getting a self-cleaning litter box. They are great to have for cats that spend a lot of time by themselves, as they virtually eliminate any scooping of litter on your part. You can find them at your local pet or department store, even online as well. They are very affordable – and ideal for anyone who doesn’t like scooping waste from their litter box.

And to make this daily unpleasant chore easier, choosing the right type of cat litter does make a difference. You may like to select one that produces less tracking, dust and preferably non-sticking to the litter box for easy washing and cleaning.
