Today, we are going to talk about the Suit of Pentacles.
Pentacles represent the element 'Earth'. Earth is something solid. Earth is something that sustains all the other elements. Earth is sensual, materialistic, and practical. Thus, the Suit of Pentacles is a depiction of the story of human beings who are materialistic, practical and have basic earthy natures and desires. This suit is to do with how practical and materialistic approaches create good and bad things in the life of an individual.
The suit of pentacles typically covers issues surrounding the areas of life where practicality and money are important - they talk about work and relationships from these perspectives. They show us how the Earth energy within us drives us forward - sometimes into difficult situations and at times into harmonious situations.
All the cards in a Suit are connected to each other - they are a progressive story of events that begins with the Ace and the cycle completes and transitions into the next level at the 10 (Ten). This is the manner in which most modern students of Tarot study the suit's progression, or the story of the suit.
However, traditionally, the suit's story was studied beginning with the 10 (Ten) and ending with the Ace. The meaning doesn't undergo much of a change with either outlook, but the perspective certainly does. Since the suit also contains the 4 (Four) Court Cards of Page, Knight, Queen and King, they represent people who are driven and governed by Earth energy. These are the people who are practical about their lives, and live their life driven by their materialistic desires, and their earthy sensual natures. They are very practical and straightforward in their approach towards their lives.
The Page shows us how this energy is manifested in individuals at a 'beginner' or 'starter' level and the Knight shows us how it matures into adolescence. The Queen shoes us how the energy manifests at a level where this level of growth combines with the ability to share and heal, while the King shows us how the perfect maturity level achieved by a person in his life. Thus, at the level of King, the person has begun to gain control over the element and the aspects of life governed by it.
