If you are a celiac or on
gluten free diet, you would know what you can eat, however, you may not know of the kinds of drinks you can consume. There are many drinks that you can enjoy - hot or cold and alcoholic or non-alcoholic.
All your beverages need to be gluten free if you are suffering from gluten intolerance. For a gluten free drink, the alcoholic beverages should not be based on wheat or other gluten grains. It is a known fact that while making liquors, the protein gets destroyed in the distillation process, therefore, at the end; all alcoholic beverages will become gluten free. Drinking wines can also expose you to the risk of consuming gluten, as it can creep in during the manufacturing process.
While choosing liquors, it becomes difficult to differentiate a gluten free drink because liquor manufacturers do not test the drink for gluten content. This is more so because gluten free drinks are not recognized as a major requirement in society. Hence, you can either avoid liquor consumption altogether or look for types not based on gluten grains.
Beer is likely to contain gluten, as the grains or yeast used in its brewing process may contain gluten. Therefore, as a Celiac, you should avoid beer, or opt for gluten free beer only.
The case of wine is one of the most debatable areas of the liquor industry. Since wine is made from grapes and does not contain grains, it is believed to be naturally gluten free by most specialists. However, few experts say that some wines that are aged in barrels contain another substance that could have held a glutinous product. This is rare but is likely to happen. In addition, you have to avoid wine coolers. Wine coolers are not gluten free as they contain barley malt.
You can have all the pure fruit juices and most types of fruit squashes, but must avoid drinking the ‘fruit and barley’ squashes. The other drinks are absolutely gluten free – they just have flavors and vitamins. You can also have milk, tea, and coffee - but you should be careful of flavors and other toppings because they may contain gluten. If you can consume dairy products, you can also try the probiotic drinks, which are popular nowadays.
You can also have chocolate drinks made up of pure cocoa powder after verifying that they are made of drinking chocolate. They can contain some ingredients made from wheat, and such may not be completely gluten free. Avoid all malted drinks because malt extracts and malt flavoring are made from barley and used in breakfast cereals, pre-prepared meals, sweets and snacks. Some celiac can consume malt extract in low quantities, however its not the same case with all patients.
It is suggested that the people on gluten free diet should always be careful about what they eat and drink because it’s better safe than sorry, especially if you have been so good with avoiding gluten in the rest of
your diet.
