There are various makes and models of
cordless strimmers on the market today, including Black and Decker and Bosch, each of which is powered by some form of rechargeable battery pack. In general, they are a little bit more expensive than their corded rivals however they have numerous advantages over this type of strimmer, including the following:
- They are safer to use. This is because a cordless strimmer doesn't have a power cable attaching it to the mains electricity of your home. The lack of a cable means there is nothing for your to accidentally strim through while in the garden and so both you and the fuse box of your home are safer.
- You can take a cordless strimmer anywhere in the garden...or out of it for that matter. Not being tethered to an electricity supply means you can take your cordless strimmer right to the end of your garden. You can edge the lawns and trim the hedges without having to think about pulling on the cable and damaging the electrics.
- They are easier to store when not in use. A lot of corded strimmers do have facilities to wind the cable but the cable very rarely stays wound up for long. With a cordless strimmer you don't have this problem, and you don't have to worry about falling over the cable while it's lying on the floor.
The three most popular types are those that include exchangeable, rechargeable power packs which slot into the strimmer itself, those with power packs that are worn on a belt around the user's waist and those that use lightweight lithium ion batteries. The first of these three types generally have a running time of around 60 minutes, which outclasses both of the other options. Saying that, this type of cordless strimmer can take anything from 7 to 12 hours to fully recharge whereas a lithium ion battery powered one only takes around 3 to 5 hours in most cases.
Obviously each make and model is slightly different from the rest with regards to running time, recharging time and battery life, and when choosing a suitable strimmer, these factors all need to be considered. You might also want to look at how powerful they are, the various jobs you can use it for e.g. trimming the edges of lawns, cutting back bushes, hedging, topping off long grass etc. and the method by which it cuts. Some cordless strimmers use a nylon line while others have a polymer or metal blade.
In general, a
cordless strimmer is safer and easier to use than one with a mains electricity power cable. In addition they are equally as powerful and lightweight to use. The only real drawback is that they do need recharging after 30-60 minutes but as they are only designed for finishing off the gardening then this shouldn't be a problem.
