Few things have the pounding discomfort of a toothache. Determining the cause of tooth pain is the first step in stopping the pain. It may be a cracked tooth, a cavity, or even a heart problem presenting as jaw pain. Let’s look at some of the best dental treatments for tooth pain.

A large cavity can irritate the inner pulp of the tooth causing pain. It’s a very common cause of visits to the dentist. The best dental treatment for a cavity is a filling if it’s a small cavity. If it’s too large, then a root canal, crown, or even extraction can be the answer. Let the dentist determine the cause of your pain. Teeth are tricky and even though you’re sure you know where the problem tooth is, it could actually be a different tooth.

Another source of tooth pain is gum disease. Gum disease will cause bacteria to collect in pockets where the gums have receded. This can lead to pain and an abscessed tooth. The treatment for gum disease is consistent brushing and flossing, dental cleanings, and, in more serious cases, root planing which removes tartar from the root of the tooth. Gum disease can eventually lead to tooth loss.

You really don’t want to crack or fracture a tooth. This can be very painful and the treatment is a crown to protect the tooth. A root canal procedure may be necessary if the pain continues. Use care when eating hard candies and nuts. Grinding your teeth while you sleep can also cause trauma to your teeth.

The internet is littered with pages of home remedies for toothaches. Try them for temporary relief but the real answer is an evaluation by a dentist. That is the way to get the best dental treatment for tooth pain. If you want to try garlic and raw onion, it’s up to you. My favorite is the suggestion to swirl whiskey around your mouth and then swallow. Just don’t do it before driving to your dentist appointment.

Treatment by a dentist as soon as possible is the best answer to your tooth pain. Try acetaminophen while you’re waiting. Some tooth pain can be prevented by regular dental check-ups, proper brushing and flossing, and even by caring for your teeth by not using them as nut crackers and bottle openers. If you find yourself with a tooth ache, look to your dentist for the best dental treatments.

Cosmetic dentists use treatments such as teeth whitening and placement of dental implants to improve your smile's appearance.
