You may be familiar with the work of Private Eyes like Guy Noir, the famously bumbling radio show personality, dashingly smooth Magnum PI, or the legendary, clever sleuth, Sherlock Holmes. These well-known and loved characters worked to solve ordinary (and, sometimes, not-so-ordinary) cases by looking deeply into the human psyche, as well as into some often-overlooked, vulnerable areas of the victim's habits, personal, or home security. The reason why most of us can't get to the bottom of a mystery like these experts lies in our inability to ascertain and read into seemingly insignificant, but actually important, environmental data (that is, if we ever found the time to fit detective work into our busy schedules!). The true evidence that can make or break a case rarely lies in obvious facts; it is in the subtle details, rather, that crack an investigation wide open. The most blatant pieces of evidence often turn out to be red herrings, in fact—signs left deliberately by the criminal to throw untrained eyes off the scent. There is rarely such a thing as a “perfect crime,” or one which leaves no trace whatsoever; it is all in the ability to pick out and interpret the tiniest of signals.

For those of us (that is to say, the majority), who are at once not trained in the art of private detective work, and not inclined to hire one, safety tips for the modern person are not out of reach. By simply following general home security tips from leading police experts and private detectives, you, too, can enjoy the security often found only at the homes of America's most sought-after celebrities. The first thing that is recommended to do is identify the main areas of your home and neighborhood, and think about them in terms of safety-control. Starting from your individual home, you might first decide that securing the entrances to your home is the first order of business. That's where home alarm systems come into play. The top-of-the-line devices employed today use a combination of technologies in their sensors to restrict their motion alerts to threatening objects. Microwave sensors bounce invisible microwaves off of things moving in the foreground, noting their size, and compare them to non-threatening background objects, like a wall. The second kind of sensor on the market today is the Infrared sensor, which works by recording heat data of passing objects through the infrared light spectrum (an invisible light given off by any heat-producing object). The combination of these two technologies works to identify home security threats and alert you and the authorities swiftly.

Working from your home, outward, surveillance cameras installed around the property let you monitor potential intruders from a safe distance, without them ever knowing. Then, you are prepared, and it is the burglar who is caught off-guard. Of course, local threats stemming from the surrounding area are another main concern and focus point of private investigators and police officers. After all, your neighbors have an excellent vantage point should one bad apple decide to make you a target. Looking around, being vigilant, and talking to people when considering a move to a new neighborhood are all good ways to keep you and your family safe. This combined with a reliable alarm system will protect you where traditional methods fall short.
