“Traffic”. A word that may give instant stress to most people but gives a whole new sentiment to internet folks. Whatever the reasons are -- whether its business networking, social acknowledgement, media sharing, or just plain popularity boosting – everybody wants traffic in their websites. Every website aims to be known. It is there to share, to be heard. It is a social entity that needs constant attention and craves recognition… in other words, it needs traffic.
Essentially, being online is feeding man’s primal need to network and socialize. And just like in real life, online existence needs connection. This need and the internet had resulted in what we now call “Social Media Networking”. Every blogger or anyone who wants to be heard online had resorted to joining discussion forums, online social networks (e.g. Facebook and Friendster), media sharing sites (YouTube and MetaCafe), micro publications (Twitter and Plurk), or even social gaming (Online Poker and Ikariam) and MMORPG (World of Warcraft and Entropia Universe). All of these are considered social media networking.

Social media essentially is a category of online media where people are talking, participating, sharing, networking, and bookmarking online. Most social media services encourage discussion, feedback, voting, comments, and sharing of information from all interested parties.
It's more of a two-way conversation, rather than a one-way broadcast like traditional media. Another unique aspect of social media is the idea of staying connected or linked to other sites, resources, and people.
The scale and exponential growth of social media networks has caught the attention of businesses. Online recognition is the way to go in these times. Traditional media like television and radio, although not yet obsolete, is not the pinnacle in means of marketing anymore. A huge popularity in the online world will generate a higher rate in ROI of a particular business. Therefore, it is a sound and relatively inexpensive investment. A website of a business or just a simple blog will have its desired traffic with effective social media networking. Knowing and connecting with the right people through social media networking will generate the recognition needed. With it, an individual, or company can create a lot of buzz through successful use of backlinks and connections in various social media networking sites. The more people who know you exist, the better chances of targeted traffic and search engine ranking. In the World Wide Web, SEO is everything. There is nothing more satisfactory in finding your website on top of a search engine result because consequentially, you know, it will generate a massive amount of profit.

So, in effect, one of the major ways to optimize an online existence is by means of networking. Being a social butterfly in the web is not only beneficial but a fundamental behavior. Always keep in mind that there are loads of social media networks with tens, even hundreds of million registered users out there, each with their own type of crowd and niche. A smart choice of network connection will benefit your investment the most. More often than not, quality is better than quantity and with the help of social media networking, you will not only get the quantity but also the quality of targeted clients.
