The UEFA Executive Committee spearheaded an integrity workshop in Nyon last August 25 and August 26, 2009. UEFA is using its Betting Fraud Detection System (BFDS) since the new season started.

Match Monitoring

The system will monitor not just the matches organised by UEFA but also the matches in the domestic divisions and cup competitions. Around 29,000 matches are being monitored by the system each year to determine if there are any suspicious patterns in the betting.

Protection Competitions' Integrity

The central monitoring system is established to be able to monitor all European professional football games in order to protect the integrity of the matches. Associations under UEFA will access data regarding games that are under suspicion and the guidelines to be followed for investigations.

Nyon Workshop
More than 70 members attended the first Sports and Betting and Integrity Workshop held in Nyon last August 25 and 26.

Combatting corruption
The opening speeches of the UEFA President Michel Platini, the UEFA General Secretary David Taylor and the deputy general secretary Gianni Infantino summed up the objective for the system which is to fight corruption and illegal betting in football.

Fight against match-fixing

The UEFA President also stressed the need to combat match-fixing which will donwplay the integrity of the game of football and will eventually kill it if allowed to go on. The fight may not be easy but it is not impossible either. Removing match-fixing must be done in order to preserve the game of football itself.

Keynote speeches
Keynote speeches of the said event were made by UEFA's betting expert and UEFA's chief disciplinary inspector. The betting expert provided great examples on the methods of match-fixing and how to detect if there is a match-fixing. After determining the problem, steps on how to handle it were also delineated. UEFA's chief disciplinary inspector speech was focused on the investigation process.

Detection system
On the second day, the Betting Fraud Detection System (BFDS) provided demonstration on the database application. The BFDS will provide an initial report if they detect manipulation in the game. The report will serve as the basis for conducting an investigation later.

Working Procedures
The need for gathering enough evidence was also stressed in the workshop.

Youth Education Programme
The association believes that it is vital to create a youth education programme to inform players the risks involved if they are approached by fixers.
