You might experience several issues while using Boot Camp, which might compel you to reformat the entire hard disk. In such cases, you require a complete data backup or a powerful Mac Data Recovery tool to recover seemingly lost data.

For example, consider that you try to use Boot Camp to install Windows on your Intel-based Mac computer. You come across the below error message, which prompts that it is unable to move some files:

“The disc can not be partitioned because some archives can not be moved. Make a secure copy of the disc, and use Disc Utility to format it as a unit in formatted Mac OS - enlarged (journaled). Reform your informations on the disc, and try to use Boot Camp Assistant again”

You cannot create the partition for installing Windows and hence cannot install it.

Cause

Boot Camp might fail to create partition for Windows because of any of the below causes:

You click to partition and then undo the operation. You then clicked to create another partition

Boot Camp requires the minimum size of Windows partition to be of at least 5 GB and should leave minimum of 5 GB for Mac OS X partition on hard drive. So, the error could occur due to incorrect size value for Windows partition

Incompatible files that are marked as unmovable

Boot Camp tries to create the partition on consecutive disk space. The error might result if disk is fragmented enough that it could not accommodate required consecutive disk space

Solution

You can try following fixes to isolate the given issue:

Boot your computer using installation disk and select Disk Utility in the Utilities menu to choose the partition tab. You can then change the size of smaller Mac hard drive to the required free space. Click Apply and add another partition. You should then remove the installation disk and remove the newly created partition.

Make sure that you specify correct partition size values for Windows partition

Try identifying the files that are marked as unmovable. Delete these files

Use a third-party defrag tool to create required consecutive disk space

If none of the solutions works, reformat your Mac drive, reinstall Mac OS X, run the updates and restore data from backup. In case of any backup concerns, use a Mac Recovery Software to extract the lost data. Mac File Recovery utilities are special tools designed to locate and restore missing data from a logically crashed Mac drive.

Stellar Phoenix Macintosh Data Recovery is a fully-featured utility to recover lost data from Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard,10.5 Leopard , 10.4 Tiger and 10.3.9 Panther based systems.
