Our idea of cleaning our coffee pots is just sticking it in our dishwasher (if it is okay to use the dishwasher, that is) or just rinse it with faucet water. Well, rinsing does not cut it. If the essential oils coming from your coffee beans are not effectively eliminated, it will cause rancidity.

Rancidity is so far from our idea of a different kind of coffee experience. You need to have the right cleaning arsenals—vinegar, baking soda, toothbrush (the small one so it can reach hard-to-reach places) and dishwashing liquid.

Let’s get the cleaning started!

Step 1: Remove the detachable parts. If it has a built-in grinder, remove it. If the water reservoir is removable, take it off. Anything that can come off but you can still easily re-attach should be removed.

Step 2: Once you have removed the detachable parts, you need to clean the main body of the coffee maker first so that by the time you have cleaned the detachable parts, the body is already dry. Mix one cup of vinegar with two cups of water. This vinegar solution helps loosen up mineral deposits and dried up oil. Wash the body of the machine (excluding the motor part) with this solution. Scrub it clean.

Step 3: Once you have scrubbed the body clean, Mix dishwashing liquid with water until it forms the much-needed suds. Use the suds to rinse the vinegar away. Once you are finished with this process, wipe it clean with dry and clean cotton cloth.

Step 4: Use the remaining vinegar solution in the detached parts. Scrub the collected oil off especially the carafe and the grinder receptacle. Once you are done, rinse it off using the dishwashing liquid.

Step 5: Rinse the parts off with water and place it on top of a dry towel to dry completely. Don’t put the parts back until they are completely dry so you can prevent mold and mildew formation in hidden, hard-to-reach areas.

These steps should be done once a month so you can prevent essential oils from hardening up. If you postpone cleaning your coffee maker, it will be more difficult for you to get rid of it when you have the time to do some serious coffee maker cleaning. Doing it once a month can lessen your work.

So keep these cleaning materials ready every month so you can clean your coffee pot the right and the efficient way.
