What is Mold? Mold is a tiny living organism which is natural part of our Florida environment. Outdoors, it plays a beneficial role in the ecosystem breaking down dead organic material and recycling it. Molds come in many colors – green, white and black molds being the most common. Molds reproduce by emitting tiny spores which float through the air indoors and outdoors. When the mold spores land on any damp spot, they grow and digest the material. There are molds which grow on food, carpets, paper products, and wood.

Many natural materials such as fabrics and leather can host mold growth as well. Though beneficial in the natural environment, mold growth in the home can cause health problems and damage. Mold spores in concentration can exacerbate the symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments. There is no way to eliminate spores from the air; however elimination of the moist areas in which they grow is key to stopping the spread of growth within the home. To eliminate moisture: Fix water leaks like leaky plumbing immediately. Ensure adequate ventilation. Ensure that HVAC drip pans are clean flowing. Keep indoor humidity below 60% (RH) Do not leave wet or damp spots un-cleaned for long. If you have extensive mold or toxic black mold growth within the home professional mold remediation will be necessary.

The actual process of mold remediation depends on the type of mold and the extent of its contamination. Mold remediation can be dangerous and if there is toxic black mold present it should be removed by professionals using approved protection devices to prevent exposure.
