Before knowing anything about CRB checks, let's discuss about the agency. CRB (The Criminal Records Bureau), an Executive Agency of the Home Office, helps employers to make an easy access to the criminal records of prospective employees for the employment purpose in their organizations. The CRB service enables organizations to recruit candidates by identifying their past criminal records. Nowadays, due to innovative and enhanced disclosure service, CRB helps employers to select suitable candidates for specific jobs. It helps in disqualifying candidates who have past criminal records. Till 2007, the CRB processed 3.4 million checks.

The CRB offers two types of check which includes Standard and Enhanced

These checks are not available for everyone, but are only available to organizations and for those professions, institutions, employments, work and occupations which are listed in the Exceptions Order to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

Standard CRB:

The Standard Level of CRB check is basically for posts that involve working with children or vulnerable adults. Apart from these, it is also for certain occupations and professions which are listed in the Exceptions Order to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974. Standard criminal record checks demonstrate current and past convictions, cautions, warnings and reprimands retained on the Police National Computer.

Enhanced CRB:

Enhanced check is for posts which are involved with a far greater degree of contact with children or vulnerable adults. Generally, their work area involves regularly caring for, supervising, training or being in sole charge of such types of people. Some of the popular examples include teacher, medical professionals, scout or guide leader.

If a candidate's position involves working with children or vulnerable adults, the following pieces of information may also be searched:

• Protection of Children Act (POCA) List
• Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA) List
• Information that is retained under Section 142 of the Education Act 2002 (formerly known as List 99)

For more information concerning CRB checks, you need to search the web as it is the only source where pool of information is available. So, hire employees only after performing CRB checks as helps you to determine the credibility of employees.
