Wouldn't it be great to shed those years of overeating in a few weeks, and have a slim new you emerge like a butterfly from a cocoon! That is the promise of fad diets, but the truth is very different.

The promise is there is a miracle way to quickly undo all the years of bad eating habits.

The promise is that if we try a new diet approach, this time will be the right way.

The promise is that if a celebrity endorses the plan or product, it must be good.

We know the fad diets of days gone by: Atkins, Maple Syrup, Zone, Blood, Cabbage, Grapefruit, Hay. The list goes on. Celebrities endorse them! And see how great they look? So the "proof is in the pudding", right?

Do fad diets really contribute to permanent weight loss for dieters? Studies indicate that within 18 months, 90 percent of fad dieters regain all the pounds they lost, and then some. Why? Because we cannot sustain a healthy life for long on such plans, and the body seeks to regain balance.

During fad diets, because we consume fewer calories, our metabolisms slow down. This leads to a starvation response which will eat away at muscle tissue while still retaining fat. Does that sound like a good plan?

Quick weight loss from fad diets often leads to many side effects such as bad breath, bone loss, and constipation. In addition you may suffer from depleted vitamins and minerals, muscle loss, metabolism slow down, headaches, and poor sleep. High protein diets can increase risk of heart disease, colon cancer, bad breath, and constipation.

There is no promise that the pounds will remain off for a long time. There is no promise that fad diets are good for our body's health.

Choosing an eating plan to lose weight and gain health and fitness is a lifelong journey, not a flash in the pan. To choose the right diet, you must consider such factors as your age, fitness level, activity level, and medical history.

A real weight loss program won't consist of one or two meager ingredients to ingest for weeks on end. The body isn't wired for that. A diet program that can be followed for life cannot be provided by fad dieting.
